What is the Random Musical Instrument Generator?

The random musical instrument generator picks from a list of instruments played around the world, including orchestral strings like the violin and viola, woodwinds such as the clarinet, and popular fretted instruments like the ukulele and bass guitar.

Choose how many instruments you want, from 1 to 50, with three as the default. Each pick is independent, so the same instrument can appear more than once in a longer list — which is handy if you are building an imaginary band with doubled parts. One result is a great prompt for “what should I learn next?”, while three to five give you a lineup for a songwriting or arranging challenge.

Results are generated in your browser using the Web Crypto API, and nothing is stored. Copy them or export them as CSV, JSON or TXT. Teachers can project the generator in class and ask students to identify the instrument family, describe how it produces sound or name a famous piece that features it.

Instrument families in brief

Most instruments fall into a few broad families. Strings, such as the violin, viola, ukulele and bass guitar, make sound with vibrating strings. Woodwinds, such as the clarinet and flute, use air directed across an edge or through a reed. Brass instruments buzz the player’s lips into a mouthpiece, and percussion instruments are struck, shaken or scraped. Generate a few instruments and try sorting them into families — then listen to a recording of each to hear the difference.
