What is the Random Dinosaur Generator?

The random dinosaur generator picks names from a list of well-known prehistoric species: armored plant-eaters such as Ankylosaurus, giant sauropods like Diplodocus, horned predators like Carnotaurus, early discoveries such as Iguanodon and small feathered dinosaurs like Microraptor. It is a fun way to discover species beyond the usual T. rex and Triceratops.

Choose how many names you want, from 1 to 50, with three as the default. Each pick is independent, so the same dinosaur can show up more than once in a long list — handy when several players are drawing from the same pool.

Many dinosaur names describe the animal in Greek or Latin: Carnotaurus means “meat-eating bull”, a nod to the horns above its eyes, and Microraptor means “small thief”. Looking up the meaning is a great extra activity for kids. Results are generated in your browser with the Web Crypto API and can be copied or exported as CSV, JSON or TXT.

Dinosaur activity ideas

Turn each random name into a mini investigation. Ask: Did it eat plants or meat? Did it walk on two legs or four? Which period did it live in — Triassic, Jurassic or Cretaceous? How big was it compared with a car or a bus? Younger kids can draw the dinosaur and invent a habitat for it, while older students can compare two random picks and argue which would win in a survival challenge — using real evidence from books or museum websites.

Press Generate again for a fresh set — it’s free and unlimited.
