Random Name Generator by country

What is the Random Name Generator?

Our name lists are built from the most common given names and surnames in each country, so the results sound authentic: “Lukas Schneider” in Germany, “Chloé Dubois” in France, “Haruto Tanaka” in Japan. For China and Korea the family name correctly appears first.

Names carry culture in small details. Spanish speakers traditionally have two surnames, one from each parent; Icelandic surnames are usually patronymics such as “Jónsdóttir”; Russian surnames change their ending for women, so Ivanov becomes Ivanova. Even the order differs: in China, Korea and Hungary the family name traditionally comes first. Keeping these conventions in mind helps you judge whether a form, database or cast of characters truly respects names from around the world.

Naming characters that feel right

Generate a batch for your story’s setting and read the names aloud. Choose ones that sound clearly different from each other — readers easily mix up characters whose names start with the same letter or share the same rhythm. Think about age as well: popular names change from generation to generation, so a grandmother and her granddaughter rarely share the same style of name. Keep a list of the names you have used so that minor characters stay distinct.

Names in test data

Real names break naive assumptions. Test with accents (Chloé, Müller), apostrophes and hyphens (O’Brien, Smith-Jones), very short names and very long ones. Never assume that everyone has exactly one first name and one last name, or that names contain only the letters A to Z. Because combinations are random, a full name may match a real person by coincidence — use results as fictional placeholders and never to impersonate anyone. Press Generate to fill your list.

Frequently asked questions

Are the names real?

Each first name and surname is genuinely common in the selected country, but the combinations are random and don’t refer to real people.

Can I generate only female or male names?

Yes, use the Gender option. “Any” mixes both evenly.

Can I get only first names or last names?

Yes, change “Show” to “First name only” or “Last name only”.

Can I use a generated name for a fictional character?

Yes, that is one of the most popular uses. If your work will be published, do a quick search to make sure the full name isn’t strongly associated with a well-known real person.

Why test forms with accented or hyphenated names?

Because real users have them. Names like Chloé, O’Brien or Smith-Jones often expose encoding bugs and overly strict validation rules.
