What is the Random ZIP Code Generator?

Postal codes look simple until your validation breaks on a Canadian or Dutch one. This generator produces codes in each countryโ€™s real pattern and regional prefix: US ZIP codes start with the digits used in that state, UK postcodes use the cityโ€™s genuine outward code (M for Manchester, EH for Edinburgh), and Brazilian CEPs use the 00000-000 layout.

Each format has its own quirks. US ZIP codes have five digits, with an optional four-digit โ€œZIP+4โ€ extension for more precise delivery. Canadian codes alternate letter and digit in two groups of three, and never use the letters D, F, I, O, Q or U. UK postcodes split into an outward code (area and district) and an inward code (sector and unit), separated by a space. Dutch codes combine four digits with two letters. Testing against a broad mix is the quickest way to learn whether your form accepts addresses from your real customers.

How the US ZIP code is organised

The first digit of a ZIP code marks a broad group of states, running roughly from 0 in the Northeast to 9 on the West Coast, Alaska and Hawaii. The first three digits together point to a sectional center facility โ€” a regional mail-processing hub โ€” and the last two narrow the code down to a post office or delivery area. That is why a random ZIP with the right prefix looks plausible for its city even when the complete code isnโ€™t assigned.

Tips for postal-code validation

Donโ€™t force every country into one pattern. Store postal codes as text, never as numbers, or you will lose leading zeros in codes such as Bostonโ€™s 02108. Accept optional spaces, normalise letter case before validating, and remember that some places have no postcode at all โ€” Ireland only introduced Eircodes in 2015 โ€” so the field may need to be optional. Use generated codes as test data only, never to fake a real address. Press Generate to build a fresh batch for your next test run.

Frequently asked questions

Are the ZIP codes real?

They follow the real format and regional prefix of the city shown, but the last digits are random, so a specific code may not be in use.

Which formats are supported?

US ZIP, UK postcode, Canadian postal code, Australian postcode, German PLZ, French code postal, Dutch postcode, Japanese ใ€’ codes, Indian PIN codes, Brazilian CEP, Irish Eircodes, Argentine CPA and more โ€” 40 countries in total.

Can I export them?

Yes, download as CSV, JSON or TXT, or copy them all with one click.

Why does my spreadsheet drop the leading zero?

Spreadsheets treat a code like 02108 as a number. Format the column as Text before pasting, or set the column type to text when importing the CSV.

What is ZIP+4?

An optional four-digit extension written after a hyphen, such as 12345-6789, that identifies a smaller delivery segment like a building or block. The five-digit ZIP is enough for most forms.
