What is the Random Color Generator?
Fully random colors are great for surprises; curated modes give usable results. “Pastel” keeps lightness high and saturation soft, “Vivid” maximises punch, “Dark” suits backgrounds, and “Harmonious palette” spaces hues evenly around the color wheel for balanced schemes. Click any swatch to copy its HEX code.
The three formats describe the same color in different ways. A HEX code such as #3A7BD5 is RGB written in base 16: the pairs 3A, 7B and D5 are the red, green and blue values, each from 0 to 255. HSL is friendlier for editing by hand — hue is an angle on the color wheel (0° red, 120° green, 240° blue), while saturation and lightness are percentages. Need a darker shade of a swatch you like? Keep the hue and saturation, lower the lightness, and the family resemblance stays intact.

Turning random colors into a usable palette
A random swatch is a starting point, not a finished scheme. Many designers follow the 60–30–10 guideline: a dominant color for most of the surface, a secondary color for about a third, and an accent for small details such as buttons and links. Pair one or two vivid picks with neutrals — off-whites, greys or deep navy — so the bright colors have room to breathe. Generate several palettes, save the swatches you like and combine them rather than accepting the first result.
Check contrast before you ship
Text must stand out from its background to be readable. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) ask for a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text at level AA, and 7:1 for normal text at the stricter AAA level. Pastels often fail as text colors on white, while dark modes need light enough text to pass. Also avoid using color alone to carry meaning — add icons or labels so people with color-vision deficiencies get the message too. Pick a mode and press Generate to explore new combinations.
