What is the Random Planet Generator?

The random planet generator picks from the eight planets of our solar system plus well-known dwarf planets such as Pluto and Makemake. Every result comes with a one-line fact: Venus is the hottest planet, with surface temperatures around 465 °C; Jupiter’s Great Red Spot is a centuries-old storm; Mars is home to Olympus Mons, the tallest volcano in the solar system; and Pluto has a heart-shaped nitrogen-ice plain called Tombaugh Regio.

Choose how many results you want, from 1 to 20. Each pick is independent, so the same world can appear more than once in a longer list — just like drawing with replacement. That makes it handy for games where several players may land on the same planet.

Picks are made in your browser with the Web Crypto API. Copy the results or export them as CSV, JSON or TXT for worksheets and lesson plans, or keep pressing Generate for a quick-fire space quiz with friends.

How to use the Random Planet Generator

  1. Choose how many planets to draw in “How many?” (1 to 20).
  2. Press Generate to pick random planets and dwarf planets.
  3. Read the fact attached to each one, or copy the list.
  4. Export as CSV, JSON or TXT, or press Generate again for a new draw.

Planet or dwarf planet?

In 2006 the International Astronomical Union defined a planet as a body that orbits the Sun, is massive enough to be nearly round and has cleared its orbital neighborhood of other objects. Pluto and Makemake meet the first two conditions but share their region with many other Kuiper belt objects, so they are classed as dwarf planets. That decision is why Pluto, once the ninth planet, is now in a separate category — though it remains one of the most fascinating worlds we have explored.

Frequently asked questions

Does the generator include dwarf planets?

Yes. Alongside the eight planets it includes dwarf planets such as Pluto and Makemake, each clearly labeled “dwarf planet”.

Can the same planet appear twice?

Yes. Each pick is independent, so in a longer list the same planet can come up more than once.

How many planets can I generate?

You can draw between 1 and 20 results per click.

Why isn’t Pluto a planet anymore?

In 2006 astronomers defined a planet as a body that has cleared its orbit of other objects. Pluto shares its region with many Kuiper belt objects, so it is classed as a dwarf planet.
