What is the Random Country Generator?

The list covers all 193 UN member states plus Vatican City and Taiwan, for 195 countries in total. Each result shows the flag emoji, the official capital and the continent, so the tool doubles as a fun way to learn world geography.

Country lists are trickier than they look. The 193 UN member states are the usual baseline; Vatican City is a non-member observer state, and Taiwan governs itself although its international status is disputed. Including both gives a practical, familiar list. Capitals bring their own surprises — Canberra rather than Sydney, Ottawa rather than Toronto, Ankara rather than Istanbul — which makes the results perfect quiz material. Use the continent filter whenever a lesson, game or cooking challenge should stay within one region.

Fun ways to use a random country

Turn each result into a mini-project: find the country on a map, learn how to say “hello” in its main language and look up a traditional dish. Families can host a “world dinner” night, while classrooms can collect facts into a shared passport booklet with one page per country. Language learners can draw a country and listen to a song or radio station from it.

A note on flags and continents

Flag emoji are built from two “regional indicator” letters based on the country’s ISO 3166-1 code, so the French flag is made from F and R. When a system doesn’t support them, you simply see those two letters. Continent boundaries are a convention too: countries such as Russia, Turkey and Egypt span two continents, so different sources may group them differently. Ready for your next destination? Frequently asked questions

How many countries are included?

195: all 193 UN member states plus Vatican City and Taiwan.

Can I pick only European or Asian countries?

Yes, use the Continent filter to limit results to Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America or Oceania.

Why don’t flags show on my computer?

Some Windows versions don’t render flag emoji and show two letters instead. The country name and capital are always shown.

What is the smallest country on the list?

Vatican City, with an area of less than half a square kilometre — it is surrounded entirely by the city of Rome.

Can I use it to assign countries to students fairly?

Yes. Generate as many countries as you have students and hand them out in order — the draw uses your browser’s cryptographic random generator, so nobody can predict it.
