What is the Random Coordinates Generator?

Picking random latitude values naively over-samples the poles. RandNow uses an area-uniform distribution for worldwide points, so every square kilometre of the planet has the same chance of being chosen. Choose up to eight decimal places — six decimals is about 11 cm of precision.

Latitude measures how far north or south of the equator a point lies, from −90° to +90°; longitude measures east or west of the Greenwich meridian, from −180° to +180°. Negative latitudes are in the Southern Hemisphere and negative longitudes in the Western. A degree of latitude is always about 111 km, but a degree of longitude shrinks as you approach the poles — which is exactly why picking latitudes naively crowds points near the poles, and why area-uniform sampling matters.

How to use the Random Coordinates Generator

Popular uses

  • Mapping & GIS testing — seed geospatial queries and map components.
  • Geo-games — play “guess where this is” with friends.
  • Adventure — find a random spot near your city to explore.
  • Location-based app QA — test distance and geofencing logic.

Why use RandNow?

  • Instant & unlimited — no sign-up, no daily caps.
  • Private by design — results are generated in your browser, not on our servers.
  • Export-ready — copy, CSV, JSON and TXT downloads built in.
  • Cryptographically random — powered by the Web Crypto API.

Decimal degrees vs. degrees, minutes and seconds

Decimal degrees express a position as two plain numbers, ideal for code and spreadsheets. The traditional DMS form splits each degree into 60 minutes and each minute into 60 seconds. To convert, keep the whole degrees, multiply the remainder by 60 for minutes, then multiply the new remainder by 60 for seconds: 48.8584° becomes 48° 51′ 30.2″.

Watch the axis order

Map search boxes and many APIs expect “latitude, longitude”, but GeoJSON and several GIS libraries store “longitude, latitude”. Swapping them is one of the most common geo bugs — a point in Paris can suddenly appear in the Indian Ocean off Somalia. Generate a batch, plot it and confirm your markers land where you expect. It also helps to test points near the edges of the map, such as the poles and the 180th meridian, where many distance and bounding-box calculations quietly fail. If you use the tool to find a spot to explore, check the map first, stay on public land and respect local rules. Press Generate to drop your next pin.

Frequently asked questions

Are the points evenly distributed?

Yes. Worldwide points are area-uniform, so they aren’t clustered near the poles. Note that about 71% of Earth is ocean, so most worldwide points land in water.

How precise are the coordinates?

You choose 1–8 decimal places. Four decimals ≈ 11 m, six decimals ≈ 11 cm.

Which format is used?

Decimal degrees (DD), e.g. 48.858370, 2.294481 — the format accepted by Google Maps and most APIs.

What do negative coordinates mean?

A negative latitude is south of the equator and a negative longitude is west of Greenwich. Rio de Janeiro, for example, is at roughly −22.9, −43.2.

Is it safe to visit a random point?

Only if it is public and accessible. Check the map preview, avoid private property and dangerous terrain, and never trespass to reach a point.
