What is the Random Direction Generator?
The Random Direction Generator picks compass directions and shows each one three ways: the abbreviation, the full name and the bearing in degrees, such as “SW (Southwest · 225°)” or “E (East · 90°)”. It replaces a spinning bottle or a coin flip whenever you need to decide which way to go.
The Compass points menu controls how fine the choice is. “4” limits results to the cardinal directions North, East, South and West. “8” adds the intercardinal directions — Northeast, Southeast, Southwest and Northwest — at 45° steps. “16” adds the in-between points such as North-northeast at 22.5° steps. The How many? field returns 1 to 16 directions at once, useful for planning several turns in a row.
Every direction in the chosen set is equally likely. Picks are made in your browser with the Web Crypto API, so there is no hidden bias toward any heading. Nothing is stored, and you can copy or export the results as CSV, JSON or TXT.

Reading compass bearings
Bearings are measured clockwise from North at 0°. East is 90°, South 180° and West 270°. On an 8-point compass each step is 45°, so Northeast is 45° and Northwest 315°. A 16-point compass halves that to 22.5°, giving points like East-southeast at 112.5°. Sailors and hikers still use these names today, and a quick look at any map shows how the same system labels winds, roads and coastlines.
If you take a random walk, stay on safe public paths, respect private property and keep an eye on traffic — chance should add fun, not risk. Press Generate again for a fresh direction — it’s free and unlimited.
