Compass Points Explained: Read Bearings Like a Navigator

North, east, south and west are easy. But what exactly is north-northeast, why is southwest 225 degrees, and why does your compass not point to the North Pole? Sailors, hikers and pilots learn these ideas early because a vague direction can lead a long way off course. This guide explains the compass rose from four points to thirty-two, shows how bearings work, and suggests playful ways to let a random direction lead the way.

From four points to thirty-two

The compass rose divides the circle into ever finer steps:

  • 4 cardinal points: North, East, South and West, 90ยฐ apart.
  • 8 points: add the intercardinal (or ordinal) directions Northeast, Southeast, Southwest and Northwest, 45ยฐ apart.
  • 16 points: add the in-between points such as North-northeast and West-southwest, 22.5ยฐ apart.
  • 32 points: traditional marine compasses go further, with points such as โ€œNorth by east,โ€ 11.25ยฐ apart.

Reciting all 32 points in order was a classic test for apprentice sailors, known as โ€œboxing the compass.โ€

How the 16-point names are built

The names follow a simple rule: start with the nearest cardinal point, then add the intercardinal direction it leans toward. North-northeast sits between North and Northeast, and east-northeast sits between East and Northeast. To remember the order of the cardinal points clockwise, many children learn the phrase โ€œNever Eat Soggy Waffles.โ€

How bearings in degrees work

A bearing measures direction as an angle clockwise from north, from 0ยฐ to 360ยฐ. North is 0ยฐ (or 360ยฐ), East is 90ยฐ, South is 180ยฐ and West is 270ยฐ. Everything else falls in between:

  • Northeast โ€” 45ยฐ
  • Southeast โ€” 135ยฐ
  • Southwest โ€” 225ยฐ
  • Northwest โ€” 315ยฐ
  • North-northeast โ€” 22.5ยฐ
  • East-southeast โ€” 112.5ยฐ

Bearings are often written with three digits, such as 045ยฐ or 090ยฐ, so they cannot be misheard over a radio. To reverse a bearing โ€” to find the way back โ€” add or subtract 180ยฐ.

True north, magnetic north and grid north

A magnetic compass points to magnetic north, which is not the same as the geographic North Pole (true north). The angle between them is called magnetic declination or variation. It depends on where you are and slowly changes over the years, so navigators check current values on up-to-date maps and charts.

Maps add a third idea, grid north, the direction of the vertical grid lines printed on the map. For a short walk the differences may hardly matter, but over long distances a few degrees can put you far from your target.

Draw random directions with RandNow

The Random Direction Generator above works like a fair virtual compass spin:

  1. Choose the Compass points setting: 4 for cardinal directions only, 8 to add the intercardinal directions, or 16 for 22.5ยฐ steps.
  2. Set How many? from 1 to 16 to plan several turns in a row.
  3. Press Generate. Each result shows the abbreviation, full name and bearing, such as SW (Southwest ยท 225ยฐ).
  4. Copy or export the list as CSV, JSON or TXT.

Every direction in the chosen set is equally likely, so no heading is quietly favored.

Fun ways to use a random heading

  • Random walk: draw eight directions and turn that way at each junction on a familiar, safe route. You may discover a cafรฉ or park you never noticed.
  • Classroom drill: call out a random direction and ask students to give the bearing, or the reverse.
  • Treasure hunt: chain clues like โ€œten steps Northeast, then five steps South.โ€
  • Game masters: decide where a storm, a monster or a lost traveler is heading.
  • Drawing prompt: sketch the view in the drawn direction from your window.

For a destination rather than a heading, try random map points:

Staying safe outdoors

Random directions are for fun in places you know. On real hikes, plan a route in advance, carry a map and a charged phone, tell someone where you are going and turn back if the weather changes. A compass is only useful if you have practiced with it before you need it.

Pro tips

  • Learn the four 45ยฐ intercardinal bearings first; the rest follow from halving.
  • Write bearings with three digits, such as 045ยฐ, to avoid mistakes.
  • To return the way you came, add or subtract 180ยฐ from your bearing.
  • Use the 4-point setting for young children and 16 points for navigation practice.

Frequently asked questions

Why are bearings measured clockwise from north?

It is a navigation convention that lets everyone describe direction with one number. Mathematics usually measures angles counterclockwise from east, so do not mix the two systems.

What is the difference between a heading and a bearing?

A heading is the direction something is pointing or moving, while a bearing is the direction from you to another point. Both use degrees from north.

What does โ€œNorth by eastโ€ mean?

It is a point on the 32-point compass, one step of 11.25ยฐ from North toward East.
