Seven Wonders Old and New: A Guide to Famous Landmarks

Lists of wonders are older than guidebooks. More than two thousand years ago, Greek writers collected the most impressive structures of their known world, and the idea still shapes how we rank famous places today. But only one ancient wonder survives, and the modern list was chosen by public vote. Here is a tour of both lists, what makes a landmark iconic and how to use random landmarks for learning and play.

The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

The classic list, compiled by Greek writers, focused on the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East:

  1. Great Pyramid of Giza, Egypt โ€” the oldest wonder and the only one still standing.
  2. Hanging Gardens of Babylon โ€” described in ancient texts, though no one has confirmed where, or whether, they existed.
  3. Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Greece.
  4. Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, in todayโ€™s Turkey.
  5. Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, which gave us the word โ€œmausoleum.โ€
  6. Colossus of Rhodes, a giant bronze statue toppled by an earthquake.
  7. Lighthouse of Alexandria, damaged by earthquakes and eventually lost.

The New Seven Wonders

In 2007 the results of a worldwide public vote named a modern list, the New7Wonders of the World:

  • Great Wall of China
  • Petra, Jordan
  • Christ the Redeemer, Brazil
  • Machu Picchu, Peru
  • Chichรฉn Itzรก, Mexico
  • Colosseum, Italy
  • Taj Mahal, India

The Great Pyramid of Giza was given an honorary status. Because it was a popular vote rather than an expert ranking, the list is best seen as a snapshot of the places people love most.

How we know about the ancient wonders

Most of what we know comes from ancient writers rather than ruins. The Greek poet Antipater of Sidon wrote a poem in the second century BC that lists sights very close to the familiar seven, and other authors produced their own versions. The original Greek idea was closer to โ€œsights worth seeingโ€ than โ€œwonders,โ€ making the lists something like the first travel guides.

Archaeology fills in some gaps. Remains of the Temple of Artemis and the Mausoleum have been excavated, and divers have found stone blocks in the harbor of Alexandria that may come from the lighthouse. The Hanging Gardens remain the great mystery, and some historians suggest the story may describe gardens in a different Mesopotamian city.

What makes a landmark iconic?

Famous sights tend to share a few traits:

  • A recognizable silhouette โ€” you could sketch the Eiffel Tower or the Sydney Opera House from memory.
  • A story โ€” the Atomium in Brussels was built for the 1958 Worldโ€™s Fair and represents an iron crystal magnified billions of times.
  • Scale or ambition โ€” Mount Rushmoreโ€™s faces are carved into a granite mountainside.
  • Layers of history โ€” Hagia Sophia in Istanbul has served as a cathedral, a mosque and a museum.

Since 1978, UNESCOโ€™s World Heritage List has recognized sites of outstanding value, which gives many of these places international attention and protection.

Frequently asked questions

Which ancient wonder still exists?

Only the Great Pyramid of Giza survives. The other six were destroyed by earthquakes, fire or time, or, in the case of the Hanging Gardens, may never have been located.

Who chose the New Seven Wonders?

They were chosen through a worldwide public vote organized by a private foundation, with results announced in 2007.

Are there official natural wonders too?

Several lists of natural wonders exist, but none is an official international ranking. UNESCO lists natural sites on its World Heritage List instead.
