What is the Random File Name Generator?

Upload forms, file managers, storage buckets and sync tools all need test data that looks like real files. This generator produces descriptive, human-readable names such as friendly-waterfall.png or silent-tower.pdf, sometimes with a version suffix like -v6, and attaches a matching extension.

Use the File type option to limit the results to images, documents, code, audio and video, or archives — or leave it on “Any” for a realistic mix. The Naming style option controls how words are joined: snake_case with underscores, kebab-case with hyphens, camelCase, or a style that includes a date, which is handy for testing sorting and archiving logic. You can generate up to 100 names in one batch.

Only names are generated — no actual files are created or downloaded. That makes the tool a fast, safe way to fill spreadsheets, seed scripts, mock directory listings and UI prototypes with plausible file names. Pair them with the export options to drop a ready-made list into any test.

  2. Choose a File type: any, images, documents, code, audio & video or archives.
  3. Select a Naming style: snake_case, kebab-case, camelCase or with date.
  4. Press Generate and copy or export the list.

  • Export-ready — copy, CSV, JSON and TXT downloads built in.
  • Cryptographically random — powered by the Web Crypto API.

File naming best practices

Good file names are lowercase, avoid spaces and special characters, and use hyphens or underscores between words, which keeps them safe across operating systems, URLs and command lines. Putting dates in year-month-day order makes files sort chronologically. Short version suffixes like v2 are clearer than “final_final”.

Test edge cases too

When testing uploads, also try very long names, uppercase extensions and duplicate names alongside the generated ones to make sure your code handles them gracefully. Press Generate again for a fresh set — it’s free and unlimited.
