What is the Random IMEI Generator?
An IMEI consists of an 8-digit Type Allocation Code (identifying the device model), a 6-digit serial number and a check digit computed with the Luhn algorithm. Our generator follows that structure exactly, which makes it useful for testing MDM, telecom and repair-shop software that validates IMEIs.
Every mobile phone has at least one IMEI — dual-SIM phones usually have two — and on most handsets you can display it by dialling *#06#. Networks use the IMEI to identify the device, not the subscriber; that job belongs to the IMSI stored on the SIM card. Operators can block a phone reported as stolen by its IMEI, which is why the number matters in repair, resale and insurance workflows. A related 16-digit format, the IMEISV, replaces the check digit with a two-digit software version number.

Checking an IMEI by hand
The check digit is calculated from the first 14 digits. Starting with the rightmost of those 14 and moving left, double every second digit; if a doubled value is above 9, subtract 9. Add all the digits together, then choose the check digit that brings the total up to a multiple of 10. Try it on a generated IMEI and confirm you get the same final digit.
What to test in your software
Make sure your system rejects numbers with the wrong length or a bad check digit, keeps leading zeros by storing IMEIs as text, and supports devices that report two IMEIs. Check how search, duplicates and masking behave in reports too, and make sure pasted values with spaces or slashes are cleaned up before validation. Generated numbers are for testing only — never use them to alter a device or to disguise a lost or stolen phone. Press Generate to create your next test batch.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a generated IMEI on a phone?
No. Changing a device’s IMEI is illegal in many countries. These numbers are for software testing only.
What is the last digit of an IMEI?
A Luhn check digit that lets systems detect typing errors.
Are these IMEIs assigned to real devices?
The TAC prefixes are real model codes, but the serial part is random; numbers are not tied to any specific handset.
How do I find my phone’s IMEI?
Dial *#06# on the phone, look in the device settings under “About phone”, or check the original box or the SIM tray on some models.
What is the difference between IMEI and IMSI?
The IMEI identifies the phone itself, while the IMSI is stored on the SIM card and identifies the subscriber on the mobile network.
