What is the Passphrase Generator?

A passphrase is a password made of several random words, such as Orchard-Curious-Riddle-Bright-Listen-86. It is far easier to type and remember than a jumble of symbols, yet it can be just as hard to crack — because its strength comes from the number of random words, not from tricky characters.

This generator lets you choose from 3 to 12 words and create up to 30 passphrases at once. Separate the words with a hyphen, space, dot, underscore or nothing at all, capitalize each word, and optionally append a number to satisfy sites that demand digits. Each result shows an approximate entropy in bits, so you can see how much each extra word adds; five words plus a number come out at roughly 48 bits.

Words are picked with the Web Crypto API, a cryptographically secure random source, entirely inside your browser. The passphrases are never transmitted or saved, so the only copy is the one you choose to keep.

How to use the Passphrase Generator

  1. Choose the number of Words (3–12) and How many? passphrases to create.
  2. Pick a Separator: hyphen, space, dot, underscore or none.
  3. Toggle Capitalize words and Add a number to match the site’s password rules.
  4. Press Generate, compare the bit estimates and copy your favorite.

Popular uses

  • Password manager users — create a master password that is strong yet easy to type.
  • IT teams — issue temporary passwords that are simple to read aloud over the phone.
  • Families — set up Wi-Fi and shared-account passwords everyone can remember.
  • Security trainers — show how length beats complexity in password strength.

Why use RandNow?

  • Instant & unlimited — no sign-up, no daily caps.
  • Private by design — results are generated in your browser, not on our servers.
  • Export-ready — copy, CSV, JSON and TXT downloads built in.
  • Cryptographically random — powered by the Web Crypto API.

How many words do you need?

Every extra random word multiplies the number of possible passphrases, so length is the main lever. For everyday accounts protected by rate limiting, four or five words are a solid choice. For a password manager master password or disk encryption, use six words or more. The bit estimate shown next to each result helps you compare options at a glance.

Keep it random

Don’t swap words for ones you like better or rearrange them into a sentence — that reduces the randomness the estimate is based on. Use each passphrase for one account only. Press Generate again for a fresh set — it’s free and unlimited.

Frequently asked questions

Is a passphrase more secure than a password?

A long random passphrase can be as strong as or stronger than a short complex password, and it is much easier to remember and type. The key is that the words are chosen randomly.

How many words should my passphrase have?

Four or five words suit most online accounts; use six or more for master passwords and encryption keys. You can choose anywhere from 3 to 12 words.

What does the bits number mean?

It estimates the entropy — how many guesses an attacker would need, expressed as a power of two. Each additional bit doubles the work required to crack it.

Are my passphrases saved anywhere?

No. They are generated in your browser with the Web Crypto API and are never sent to a server or stored.
