What is the Random Team Generator?

Enter participants one per line, choose the number of teams and press Generate. The list is shuffled fairly and dealt out like cards, so team sizes never differ by more than one person.

Random teams do more than save time. When captains pick sides, the same people tend to be chosen last, and that can sour a lesson or a game before it begins. Letting chance decide removes the awkwardness and mixes up friendship groups, which teachers and workshop leaders often want anyway. It also makes rotating partners easy: generate a fresh split for each round so people meet new teammates, and keep a copy of every line-up in case you need to settle who was on which side.

How even splits are calculated

The shuffled list is dealt out one person at a time, team by team, just like cards around a table. If the group divides exactly, every team ends up the same size. If it does not, the leftover players go to the first few teams, one each. For example, 23 people split into four teams gives three teams of six and one team of five. That is why sizes never differ by more than one, whatever numbers you choose.

Tips for fairer games

The generator does not know who is fast, tall or experienced, but you can still balance skill with a simple trick. Split your players into two lists — experienced and beginners — and run each list separately with the same number of teams. Then combine Team 1 from the first run with Team 1 from the second, and so on. Every team gets a fair mix of both groups. For mixed classes, use the same method to balance year groups or other categories. When a match turns out lopsided, simply generate again for the next round. Enter your names, set the number of teams and press Generate.

Frequently asked questions

Are teams balanced in size?

Yes, sizes differ by at most one member.

Can I balance by skill?

Not automatically — but you can generate several times until you’re happy with the mix.

How many people can I add?

There is no hard limit; hundreds work fine.

What happens when the group does not divide evenly?

The extra players are spread across the first teams, one per team, so the largest and smallest teams differ by just one person.

How can I mix beginners and experienced players?

Run the generator once for each skill group using the same number of teams, then merge the matching team numbers from both runs.
