What is the Random Version Number Generator?
Semantic Versioning (SemVer) is the most widely used scheme for software version numbers. A version has three parts — MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH — where a major bump signals breaking changes, a minor bump adds backward-compatible features and a patch bump fixes bugs. Pre-release versions append a hyphen and a label such as alpha.2 or beta.1.
This generator creates random, correctly formatted SemVer strings such as 4.26.26, 3.1.48 or 2.27.45-alpha.2. Turn on “Include pre-releases” to mix in pre-release tags, or switch it off when you only want stable versions. You can create up to 100 version numbers per batch.
The output is ideal for testing anything that parses, compares or sorts versions: package managers, update checkers, release dashboards, changelog generators and dependency tools. Because the numbers are random, they also make neutral placeholders for documentation and UI mockups. Everything is generated in your browser and nothing is stored, so you can create as many batches as your test plan needs.
How to use the Random Version Number Generator
- Enter How many? version numbers you need, up to 100.
- Toggle Include pre-releases to add tags like -alpha.2 to some results.
- Press Generate to get the list.
- Copy the versions or export them as CSV, JSON or TXT for your tests.
Popular uses
- Developers — test version parsing, comparison and sorting logic.
- QA testers — check update prompts and compatibility checks with varied versions.
- Technical writers — use realistic version numbers in docs and release notes.
- Designers — fill app-store listings, about screens and changelog mockups.
Why use RandNow?
- Instant & unlimited — no sign-up, no daily caps.
- Private by design — results are generated in your browser, not on our servers.
- Export-ready — copy, CSV, JSON and TXT downloads built in.
- Cryptographically random — powered by the Web Crypto API.
How SemVer versions are ordered
Versions are compared part by part as numbers, not as text, so 3.30.39 is newer than 3.3.37 even though “3” sorts before “30” alphabetically. A pre-release ranks lower than the matching normal release: 2.0.0-alpha.1 comes before 2.0.0. Many sorting bugs come from comparing versions as plain strings, which makes random versions a great test input.
Tips for testing
Include multi-digit parts and pre-release tags in every test run, and check that your code rejects malformed strings. Press Generate again for a fresh set — it’s free and unlimited.
Frequently asked questions
What format do the version numbers use?
They follow Semantic Versioning: MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH, optionally followed by a pre-release tag such as -alpha.2.
Can I generate only stable versions?
Yes. Switch off “Include pre-releases” to get plain MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH numbers.
Is 2.0.0-alpha newer than 2.0.0?
No. Under SemVer a pre-release has lower precedence than the release it precedes, so 2.0.0-alpha comes before 2.0.0.
How many version numbers can I generate?
Up to 100 per batch, and you can regenerate as often as you like.
