What is the Random Year Generator?
The Random Year Generator picks whole years between a From and To value you set, anywhere from year 1 to year 9999. By default it draws from 1900 to 2026, which makes it perfect for history trivia, “what happened that year?” games and music or movie challenges.
Every result is labeled as a Leap year or a Common year, using the Gregorian calendar rule: a year is a leap year if it divides by 4, except century years, which must also divide by 400. That is why 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not. The label makes the tool useful for teaching calendar math and for testing date logic in software.
You can draw one year at a time or up to 100 in one go, then copy or export the list as CSV, JSON or TXT. Randomness comes from the Web Crypto API in your browser, and nothing is stored. Press Enter or Space to draw again, or share a link that keeps your range.

Game ideas with random years
Play “Year in Review”: draw a year and give everyone one minute to list as many events, inventions or hit songs from it as they can. Or try “Higher or Lower” — reveal a famous event and let players guess whether it happened before or after the random year. For students, ask how old a building, person or invention would have been in the year drawn. Writers can also use a random year as a creative constraint, building a scene around the technology and fashion of that time.
Press Generate again for another year — it’s free and unlimited.

Any range from year 1 to year 9999.
How does the tool decide if a year is a leap year?
