Randomness for Passwords, Games and Software: What Changes?
Random does not always mean secure
Random tools are great for choosing a game move or suggesting a movie genre, but secure credentials need more than an unpredictable-looking string. The underlying source of randomness matters. For a password or token, browser cryptographic functions are designed to provide stronger unpredictability than simple time-based or pseudo-random examples.
How browser generators work
RandNow uses the browser cryptographic random-number API for its built-in generators. Our password generator composes characters from the selected groups and shuffles the final sequence so required groups appear in varied positions. The UUID tool generates version 4 identifiers. Values are created on your device and are not transmitted to the site as part of generation.
More characters and better storage
Longer passwords generally offer a wider search space when their characters are selected appropriately. A memorable passphrase may be easier to type, while a long random password is often convenient to store in a password manager. Protect the device where secrets are generated, use HTTPS, and rely on a password manager for unique credentials rather than copying passwords into insecure notes or shared documents.
What about random choices?
For a classroom decision, shuffling a list or rolling a virtual die is useful and simple. Our list shuffler uses the FisherโYates shuffle, picking from the remaining positions without intentional preference. However, a general-purpose browser interface has no formal audit trail. Do not treat it as a certified lottery or regulated drawing service.
Practical boundaries
A UUID is not an authentication credential by itself, and a hashed random input is not automatically a suitable password storage system. Use professionally maintained cryptographic libraries for security-sensitive application design. Our utilities are convenient helpers, not a replacement for specialist engineering reviews.
