What is the Random Last Name Generator?
The Random Last Name Generator focuses on family names. Its Show option is preset to “Last name only”, so you get clean surnames such as Adams, Peterson, Hamilton or Fisher, each tagged with a flag and a gender symbol. The Country menu defaults to the United States, and you can switch to Germany, India, Mexico, the Netherlands, Nigeria and many more, or pick “Random country” for a global mix.
Gender is set to Any by default. In many languages surnames have different male and female forms — Greek and several Slavic naming systems are well-known examples — so the gender setting can matter when you need precise results. How many? lets you generate between 1 and 100 surnames at once, and you can switch Show to “Full name” or “First name only” at any time.
The generator runs locally in your browser using the Web Crypto API, nothing is stored, and you can copy the results or export them as CSV, JSON or TXT.

Where surnames come from
Most surnames grew out of a few sources: occupations (Fisher, Smith), places (Hill, Hamilton), personal traits and parents’ names (Peterson, “son of Peter”). The same patterns appear in other languages — Müller and Schmidt in German, Fernández (“son of Fernando”) in Spanish. Knowing this can help you choose a surname that quietly hints at a character’s roots.
Surnames are generated at random; any match with a real person is coincidental. Press Generate again for a fresh set — it’s free and unlimited.
