What is the Random Plot Generator?
The Random Plot Generator builds a structured story outline from five key elements. Every plot lists a protagonist (a retired detective, a pirate captain, a talking cat), a setting (a royal wedding, a desert island, a generation starship), an inciting incident that kicks off the story, a twist that changes everything and a goal the hero must reach.
Use the Genre menu to label your plot as Fantasy, Science fiction, Mystery, Romance, Thriller, Horror, Comedy or Adventure — or leave it on Any for a surprise. The genre frames how you tell the story: the same lighthouse and the same secret feel completely different as a horror tale or a romantic comedy. The How many? option generates from 1 to 10 plots at once, so you can compare outlines side by side.
Everything is generated in your browser and nothing is stored. Copy a plot into your notes or export a batch as CSV, JSON or TXT.

Turning an outline into a story
Use the five elements as a simple three-act map. Act one introduces the protagonist in their setting and ends with the inciting incident. Act two follows their struggle toward the goal and reveals the twist around the midpoint, forcing a change of plan. Act three resolves whether they reach the goal — and what it cost them.
Do not treat the outline as fixed. If a twist feels wrong for your genre, generate a few more plots and borrow just that element. Mixing parts from several outlines is a quick way to an original story. Press Generate again for a fresh plot — it’s free and unlimited.
