Why You Should Never Use Real Customer Data in Testing
It is tempting to clone the production database into staging: the data is realistic and it is right there. But it is one of the most common causes of data breaches.
The risks
- Weaker security: staging environments rarely get production-grade access control and monitoring.
- Compliance: GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA and PCI DSS restrict using personal data for purposes it was not collected for.
- Accidental contact: test emails and SMS can reach real customers.
The alternative: synthetic data
Synthetic data looks real but belongs to nobody. Generate complete fake identities, emails on reserved test domains, phone numbers and Luhn-valid test cards — then export them as CSV or JSON to seed your database.
