About this tool

The List Randomizer takes any list and returns every item in a new random order. Enter your items in “Your list”, one per line, and press Generate. Each item comes back with its new position — “Task C (#1)”, “Task A (#2)” and so on — so the result is ready to use as a running order, queue or ranking.

The shuffle uses the Fisher–Yates algorithm, the standard method for unbiased shuffling, driven by random numbers from the Web Crypto API. With Fisher–Yates every possible ordering of the list is equally likely, which avoids the subtle bias of quick-and-dirty methods such as sorting by a random value. Blank lines are ignored, and nothing is added or removed: you get exactly the items you entered.

The tool works with names, tasks, questions, songs, URLs or any other text. Everything happens locally in your browser, so private lists stay private. Copy the result or export it as CSV, JSON or TXT, and share a link that keeps your list in place.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type your items into Your list, one item per line.
  2. Press Generate to shuffle the list.
  3. Read the new order — each item shows its new position number.
  4. Copy or export the shuffled list, or press Enter or Space to shuffle again.

Why Fisher–Yates is the fair way to shuffle

The Fisher–Yates shuffle, described in 1938 and later adapted for computers, walks through the list from the end, swapping each item with a randomly chosen item at or before it. Done with a good random source, it produces every possible order with exactly equal probability — no item is more likely to end up first or last.

Shortcuts like sorting with a random comparison look random but can favor certain orders. If fairness matters, use a proper shuffle. Press Generate again for a fresh order — it’s free and unlimited.

Frequently asked questions

Is the list shuffle truly random?

Yes. It uses the Fisher–Yates algorithm with Web Crypto random numbers, so every ordering is equally likely.

Will any items be removed or duplicated?

No. You get back exactly the items you entered, just in a new order. Blank lines are skipped.

How do I pick winners from a shuffled list?

Shuffle the list and take the first items in order — #1, #2 and so on — as your winners.

Can I export the shuffled list?

Yes. Copy it or download it as CSV, JSON or a TXT file.
