License Plate Formats Around the World, Explained

A license plate looks like a jumble of letters and numbers, but most follow a pattern that tells a story: where the car was registered, roughly when, or simply which number came next in a national sequence. Knowing the formats makes road trips more fun, helps writers and designers get details right, and lets developers build forms that accept real-world input. Here is a tour of the most interesting systems.

Europe: patterns that tell you place and age

  • United Kingdom โ€” since 2001, plates read like AB12 CDE: two letters for the region, two digits showing the registration period, and three random letters.
  • Germany โ€” a district code of one to three letters (for example B for Berlin or M for Munich), then one or two letters and up to four digits, such as M AB 1234.
  • France โ€” since 2009, the national AB-123-CD format stays with the vehicle for life; a small regional badge on the right is the ownerโ€™s choice.
  • Italy โ€” AB 123 CD, issued in national sequence since the 1990s.
  • Spain โ€” since 2000, four digits and three consonants such as 1234 BCD; vowels are left out to avoid accidental words.
  • Netherlands โ€” groups of letters and digits separated by hyphens, like 12-ABC-3, in a series of changing patterns over the decades.

North America, India, Brazil and Australia

In the United States and Canada, plates are issued by each state or province, so formats differ widely. Many use a mix of digits and letters, such as seven characters in California or three letters and four digits in New York, and specialty designs are common.

Indiaโ€™s plates start with a two-letter state code (DL for Delhi, MH for Maharashtra), followed by a district number, a letter series and a four-digit number โ€” for example MH 12 AB 1234.

Brazil adopted the Mercosur style shared with neighboring countries, with the pattern ABC1D23: three letters, a digit, a letter and two digits. Australian states such as New South Wales issue their own sequences, often three letters, two digits and a letter.

Generating realistic plates with RandNow

The Random License Plate Generator covers 14 regions: California, New York, Texas, Florida, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Ontario, New South Wales, Brazil and India.

  1. Pick a single region for consistent results, or leave it on Random for a mix.
  2. Choose how many plates you need, up to 100 per click.
  3. Generate; each plate is labeled with its region.
  4. Copy the list or export it as CSV, JSON or TXT.

Plates are random and not checked against any registration database, so a generated combination may or may not exist on the road. Use them as test data and creative material โ€” never on a real vehicle or to identify one.

Creative and practical uses

For writers and game designers

A plate in the right format makes a scene believable: a British detective notes a plate with the correct age digits, a road movie set in Florida gets a plausible tag. Randomly generated plates avoid accidentally pointing at someoneโ€™s real car.

For developers

Parking apps, toll systems and insurance forms must accept plates with spaces, hyphens and varying lengths. A mixed batch from several regions quickly shows whether your validation is too strict.

For designers

Mockups of car ads, rental apps and parking signage look more polished with realistic plates than with โ€œABC 123โ€.

License plate games for road trips

  1. Plate words: use the letters on a passing plate, in order, to make the shortest possible word.
  2. Sum to 10: combine the digits with plus and minus signs to reach exactly 10.
  3. Region hunt: in countries with regional codes, try to spot as many different regions as possible.
  4. Alphabet run: find plates containing A, then B, then C, all the way to Z.

At home, print a page of generated plates and play the same games as a classroom warm-up.

Pro tips

  • Accept spaces and hyphens in plate fields, then normalize them before storing.
  • Do not assume a fixed length; plates range from a few characters to around ten.
  • Use generated plates in screenshots and marketing images instead of real ones.
  • Choose a single region when you need a uniform look for a story or design.

Frequently asked questions

Why do some countries avoid vowels on plates?

Leaving out vowels prevents random combinations from spelling real words, including offensive ones. Spain is a well-known example of this approach.

Do license plates stay with the car or the owner?

It depends on the country. In France the plate stays with the vehicle for life, while in many US states the plate belongs to the owner and can move to a new car.

What are personalized or vanity plates?

Many regions let drivers choose their own combination for a fee, within the local format rules and content guidelines.
